Versatility
The North Face Ultra Extreme II fit well with snowshoes and microspikes, and worked well for all lengths of hikes with unsteady, icy terrain. 

Comfort
Out of the box, the boots were slightly stiff but still comfortable with little break-in period. Arch support is minimal. The boot and toe box are narrower than other boots tested, but didn’t feel restricting. 

Traction
On ice and slick snow, the Ultra Extremes faired extremely well, providing excellent traction and little slippage due to large lugs on a Vibram Icetrek outsole.

Warmth
During hikes thorough deep snow in below freezing temperatures, the boots kept feet warm while moving, but became slightly chilled when standing still. When dunked up to the mid-shaft in an alpine lake, The North Face boots stayed dry and warm. 

Stability
The Pebax Snake plate is sturdy and stiff, keeping rocks and roots from jutting into the soles of your feet. The snug midsole and upper coupled with tight lacing provided all-around support for the foot and ankle.
